Sunday in the Park with Dan - mnemosyne - 03-03-2015 Sera almost always wakes up a little bit hung over, feeds her hangover a cup of tea laced with whiskey and a moderately hearty lunch / dinner heavy on the potatoes and the oil, light in virtually anything else. Sits in her kitchen peeling apart a chocolate croissant from Dee's bakery while Dan cleans up. Texts someone. Fifteen minutes later, makes a phone call. She and Dan talk in hushed voices in the warm kitchen. Sera has a blanket wrapped 'round her shoulders and is still wearing the boxers and band t-shirt she wore when she crawled in to bed with Dan (and his on-again off-again boyfriend, Jer) at something like five a.m. Dan is fully dressed, saw Jer off hours ago, spent some time in the sunlit music room playing with a mix, whatever. Read the paper. Made himself coffee in the Chemex, said fare-thee-well to Rick as he headed out for his late afternoon shift. No one else is home now but still: their voices are hushed. A little while later, he pulls up Ginger and leaves a message. Sera's in the shower then. Later still, they leave a note, and head to Whole Foods for provisions, then the city park to take a little looksee. Daylight now, daylight still. They return to the same bench she was sitting on that night, feeding the ducks. Sera wants to feed the ducks again but a passerby (heavy gauges in his ears, the most unique eyebrow piercings Sera has seen in a while) scolds that bread is bad for ducks and gives them diabetes or some fucking thing so she doesn't feed them. Sits on the seat of the bench rather than the spine with Dan's arm around her shoulder and smokes a joint, which she doesn't share, and two clove cigarettes, which she does share. Then she is no longer seeing the park in daylight but the park at night: and everything unfolds again, and she is there: listening. Braces her forehead against Dan's thin shoulder. At one point - her breathing becomes - well, interesting. Later: she starts shaking, bites her lip so hard it starts to bleed. It all leaves her wracked and a bit spent and she spends the whole drive up to the cabin in the mountains drowsing with her forehead against the passenger's window. |
