Riley didn't appreciate the little jab Grace made about missing her midterms. If it hadn't been for the other things the apprentice said she wouldn't even bother trying to give her a helping hand. But while Riley is part of a Tradition that overall trends toward the cocky and the arrogant, she's not a complete asshole. She's certainly not heartless.
When Grace told her what she was studying, well, Riley didn't feel a pang of guilt - what was done was done to protect Grace and to test Grace and to prime Grace for an upgrade in her magical education - but she did feel inclined to give the young woman a break. Given the course of their conversation it seemed like she needed one.
So, the Cypherpunk gives her one.
Compared to the systems Riley's accustomed to breaking into, a university system is a friggin' piece of cake. It's the kind of thing she does in her spare time, not for Sherwood, not for the VAs, just for her to keep her skills sharp. It's practically a honing exercise. Once she's in, adjusting a person's status is such a simple thing it's practically a joke.
She leaves a little something behind, something to make any Sleepers who may notice something's been adjusted think, "Oh that's normal," or, "Oh I remember that," or something else. Their mind slides right over the changes without even noticing them. By the time the effect wears off it'll be a new term, with new information and new changes and this one will be sufficiently buried.
Soon, Grace receives a letter, all official-like from the University of Colorado Denver. It's an approval letter for her medical leave of absence, effective starting the week before spring break. The courses whose midterms she missed will be waiting for her on her return to classes, whenever that happens to be.
She'll also receive, courtesy of one Riley Poole, an email containing a gift certificate to Woodhouse Day Spa, enough to cover two people's or two days' worth of signature services. The comments section reads:
"For you and a friend or just you. Take a break, G."
[[the deets: Riley switched Grace's status at school to be on a medical leave of absence, duration unknown, starting the week of midterms. the hacking part she did as soon as she was all rested up from their hacking extravaganza, but a school being what it is and the postal service being what it is, i leave it up to Noel to decide when the notification letter actually arrives.]]
