The woman didn't respond immediately to Grace's veiled accusations. Instead she glanced at the picked-through bowl of food and said, "You look hungry. I'll get you something more substantial." For a moment her grey eyes took in the state of the prisoners. There was something about the woman that felt... not cold, precisely, but wary. She didn't trust them.
"Would you prefer that we beat you? Leave you in a cramped cell with no food or water? Treat you as though you are less than human? Because that's what your people are doing to Atreyu right now."
The woman looked as though she wanted to say more, but she didn't. Perhaps it wasn't her place to. And a moment later the door to the room opened and two more women walked in. One of them, Lita, would be familiar to the prisoners. The other was a dark-skinned woman in her fifties wearing a soft white embroidered dress. An intricate tattoo coiled up over her neck and half of her face: swirling silver lines that shimmered faintly when the light touched her skin.
"I see you're awake." The older woman pulled up a chair and sat down in front of the glass-like panel. "My name is Olga Brynn. I'm the Councilwoman here. And I would very much like to know how you came to arrive at our village, and what it is you plan on doing here."
