I Spy With My Little Eye ... [Shoshannah scrying, attn Sam!]
#1
It was silly of her to actually say she could do things - then people expect her to do them. Being deposited at the Chantry was a little different and for all she's stubbornly being the best Guardian she can possibly be (to prove some point or something, to . . . well, one never knows with her), it hadn't been the same as speaking up and offering to do something. At any rate, sometime not long after the meeting Sera called closed, Shoshannah grabs her bike and heads off to somewhere far enough from the house to not draw eyes if she screws up, and takes items from her saddlebags to prepare for an extended ritual or two. She hadn't asked anyone to come with her, and so here she is, alone.

Defense is rarely Shoshannah's first thought, but protecting the house is important to her, so first she does what she can to make sure she's not traced - she'd only ridden her bike so far, after all.

That done, she pulls a small, shallow, copper bowl and pours some water into it. Then, a coin is pulled from her pocket, also copper, roughly the size of a nickel, old and very clearly not American (or anything easily recognizable by historians, for that matter). With this, she traces a few Hebrew letters over the water; the sigils glow as if made with a fourth of July sparkler before fading, and Shoshannah looks into the water beyond them. Her goal?

The home of one ShockDrop employee/executive/whatever. She wants to know what's going on over there.

Shoshannah sets everything up and she starts to extend her perceptions outward. Unfortunately she has no obvious path to the cabin itself; she perhaps knows its approximate location, but little more than that. It would make it exceedingly difficult to scry on; this is the limit of detecting spaces. The stronger the connection you have, the less Herculean a feat it is.

But then she comes upon a possibility. It's not entirely certain, but she has encountered Joshua Keller before, and she had a close interaction with the effect of the film. While scrying on one or the other may not yield the proper results (as Trent Harrison had noted, the film itself is frustratingly good at defying attempts to be located), she can cross-thatch the two of them to create enough to scan in closely.

And so she does. Her senses extends outward, the water within the copper bowl acting as a portal through which she can examine the sense from afar. And in truth, it is more difficult that she expects but soon enough the waters coalesce and a shimmering image appears--

It is a woman. That's what the Dreamspeaker sees first. The woman is attractive in a stern, almost aristocratic way. She has the high cheekbones and stark features that suggest good breeding; she appears to be somewhere in her mid-thirties, dressed in a fur-lined leather jacket, her long black hair pulled back into a ponytail. She is standing outside a...well, it had been called a cabin, but it's more luxurious than the word "cabin" would suggest. In fact, let's call it what it is: it's a mansion. She's standing on the terrace overlooking the grounds, tallking on a phone. She's speaking Italian, and Shoshanna can pick up traces here and there from her other languages she knows that are somewhat similar. She's more able to pick out proper names and words that she's sure aren't Italian than note words that give her the gist: things like "Hermetic," "Keller," "Montanari," "Vienna chantry" and "Thakinyan."

The woman doesn't seem to notice Shoshanna's scrying. As the Dreamspeaker starts to survey around the place, she gets a sense of just how big it is--and make no mistake, it is huge. Brightly lit, multiple floors, a terrace, indoor swimming room...Shoshannah probably couldn't begin to imagine how much a place like this costs, but it's certainly not anything that fits any category beyond really God-damned expensive.

She is not, unfortunately, able to get a solid survey of the place itself though. For as she's sweeping over she gets a look at Joshua Keller. She's seen the man. She knows what he looks like. And she sees him as he's walking into on of the central rooms of the house. He's dressed in a simple pair of slacks, a black turtleneck. And as she views him on high, she gets a moment of panic as his attention shoots directly to look in hers.

And he smiles. It's a smile that is distinctly...oily. There's something distinctly lacking in humanity in that gaze, and he holds her vision there as she feels, horrifically, his consciousness extend out. It seems...vast, somehow. Like a sea of feelers testing out, sniffing, trying to find her.

The good news is this: as near as she can tell, he doesn't figure out her location. There is some small relief in that, the look of frustration in his eyes. But he has a lock on her, even if he doesn't know where, and she feels her mind pried unceremoniously open before she can turn away.

Pure darkness invades, and her world goes black.

When Shoshanna comes to again, it's dark and she's cold, shivering and wet. She doesn't know how long she's been lying here. When she gets back to the Chantry, if she goes there, she finds out it's been three days. Unfortunately with Lena and Sid both out of commission and away from the Chantry and other people coming and going more sporadically, her lack of presence has been missed. She has a slight cold (but it could be worse, there's no Hydra cells!) from being out in that field for so long. And she's unable to shake this pressing feeling that she's not alone.

[[For the duration of this storyline, Shoshanna now has the Nightmares flaw. The nightmares come in various forms: being trapped in the film and being the murder victim is part of it each night, after which she descends into her own personal Hell. A place of emotional torment designed just for her by some unknown creature who she never sees but can feel watching her throughout the nightmares and delighting in her suffering.

Since the meeting finished on Monday, Shoshanna wakes up on Thursday.]]

"Good men don't need rules. And today's not the day to find out why I have so many."

Shoshannah . . . is not a studious sort, or a plotting, planning sort. Generally, she's impulsive and instinctive, and now is both the opposite and exactly the same. This time, she's in the locker room at a YWCA not terribly far from Kalen's warehouse, but far enough to not draw attention to it in case she's caught (again). She already has the feeling of eyes on her all the time, and those nightmares certainly don't help - the ones where sometimes she's the monster, or sometimes the monster gets her, or . . .

Anyway, there's preparation. There's making sure she's hidden as well as she can, of course - defense may not be her first choice, but she's not stupid either. So there's warding herself in her little space, and then there's the materials she needs for a scry. It's late, she's alone, she's so very lucky. A bowl and a bit of water for a window, and a coin to trace the letters, and after far longer than is comfortable, she can finally see. Again, she's caught - she can feel Joshua's eyes on her even as she's looking at him with other, more spiritual sight. This time, though, she manages to close her little window before he gets another talon into her.

And this time, she knows he's not just Joshua, knows for sure there's something vast and dark and evil there. It's not just a feeling, but knowledge without doubt.
