He's currently holed up at my apartment for a while. He and Elijah encountered something in the woods out near Samir's trailer. From what Elijah described, it's definitely not a local. He said it was dressed in a suit, had black skin and no facial features. Suffice to say it's not a friendly and according to Elijah, definitely doesn't belong in this dimension.

Right now I have no idea if this thing is still out there and how big of a threat it poses but I'd advise serious levels of caution if you're out in the woods. Whatever it is, it nearly killed Samir. He's safe for the moment but not exactly in the best headspace. If you need or want to see him, let me know.
Definitely in time to get ridiculously excited and decorate trees.
P.S. - Apparently only Grace and I loved the holiday pinatas. I will refrain from covering the House in pinatas again. If for some reason you would like to join us in our gleeful battering of varying paper mache symbols, we will have those at our library rather than at the House. If that's not your thing, it's okay. However many pinatas I acquire, I promise you that Grace will be happy to smash them all herself if she must.

I have word that Farrah Esmail, a newly arrived Mage in the city was attacked and killed tonight by the Nephandus known as The Artist.

Correspondence, Prime, and Life magick was used in the attack. If you have ways of bolstering your protection in these areas (especially if you have any connection to or have been assisting with the case) you should probably do so as a precaution.

I have this information from Mike MacCarrick, who was Farrah's former mentor. A word about Mike: He has been sustaining mental attacks from The Artist, and is occasionally experiencing blackouts. I believe that the murder of Victor Kozlowski and several others may have been committed by Mike while he was under the influence of The Artist during these blackouts. We are attempting to take care of that, and are calling in help.

It happens after he has let his guard down to sleep, so he is forgoing sleep for the time being, but I do not know how long that tactic will work, or if it will work. He is on our side, but if you notice him behaving in a way that is not his normal (genuinely kind, thankful, helpful) self, use caution.

New post from Alexander:

Guys, you remember that whole thing with the corrupt spirit down by the reservoir last year? There may - big may - be something similar happening again.

I was out in Reynolds Park and came across a wrecked camp site. There had been two women there - one had been killed, the other is missing. She wasn't alone when she went, though. I couldn't figure out where they went. That's not the weird part.

The weird part is the cat and bear things that attacked them. They weren't alive - at least not since some time before the attack - but they were stuffed with bits of cloth covered in some kind of symbols, and bit of rotted meat.

If you met and remember Skye, he was there. He's still trying to track down his friend Claire, who might still be affected by something from the original corruption spirit. Or something else, I'm not really sure. But he thinks that werewolves may be involved somehow. I don't think he was really convinced, but some things made him at least consider it.

Things like the magic being used not being like ours. There was something about the animals that was cold and oily, and it felt like it would have spread and contaminated anything it came near if it was left. There wasn't anything... this is hard to describe. It wasn't exactly that Entropy had been messed around with, but the whole feeling of decay around it all? It wasn't natural, but I don't think it was anything our kind of magic would have messed around with. Not that I'm any kind of expert on these things, but it just felt different.

The really freaky thing? There were gaps, I guess, in the animals. Not physical gaps, spiritual ones. It felt like they had holes in where the spirit had been. A spirit, anyway.

I've got one of the bits of cloth - Skye's done something to it to stop the contamination spreading for a while - and lots of photos. Given what might have happened to the spirits in the animals, I'm not taking it anywhere near Callisto. But I'd like to bring it somewhere safer where it can be looked at and burned if it does anything unpleasant.

Oh, yeah, burning the fuck out of the things seems to help kill off the contamination.

I told Skye I'd ask around for a few things. The first is that he could really use some help tracking down Claire and getting whatever it is affecting her out. He has contacts in California he can use, but given we're all here...

Regarding the camp site, I think there are a couple of possibilities. Skye is happy to share his memories of what he saw there. But I know some of us can look back through Time to see what actually happened. That might be the better option, if anyone is up for it. If nothing else, we can work out where the missing woman went and who she was with.

The Order is sending an official representative to check out the situation with vampires and Victoria and try to be my new handler since Trent is gone. Trent and I both were a) not of the opinion that other Magi were sadly misguided at best about how magic and the universe work, b) not into being oppressive about our opinions, and c) not really interested in the Order having much real influence in Denver.

I'm not sure who is coming out to visit but those things will almost certainly not hold true. Assume that anything you say will be used to judge you, and me, and the city in general. I'm not saying that they are going to send to a monster. But I'm also not saying that we didn't get a reputation for turning nodes into Hermetic chantries for 'their own protection' for no reason. I doubt we're going to have to deal with those kinds of shenanigans here, but do not lose sight of the fact that there is a reason we have our reputation and a reason I haven't tried to bring their attention here. Some of us are more fanatical than others. On whole, we're not terrible. Sometimes, that still fails to stop us from doing terrible things.
There is a chance, with our library project, I can wrangle a permanent guest from House Shaea if it comes to that.)
They are likely to send someone from House Quaesitor. Which basically means that they will send someone whose entire purpose is judgment. Of everything. In theory, that is measured, rational, and compassionate judgment. In practice...that is often less so.

So, you guys know I've been trying to find out more and more about the vampire problem. I still think it's a problem? But the risk of going up against them doesn't seem to be worth the reward.

I talked to Iris -- one of the vampires on the 'good' side. I don't think she was lying when she said that if the Black Orchid types gain a foothold in Denver that this city will become like Miami and New York -- that is to say, more people will disappear, more people will die, and it will be more out-in-the-open. She didn't try to impress me with claims that Lilean Holdings was trying to summon a demon or engage in mass slaughter -- something we might care a lot more about. She just said the city would become slightly worse than it already is.

She also said that if they gained a power-base here, they would start going after threats -- and we've proven ourselves to be threatening, at least. So there is that. There's no reason I can see to disbelieve anything she says, but there's also every certainty she's not telling us everything. Like, what happens when the Black Orchid isn't in the picture anymore? Do the 'good' vampires then turn their sights on threats? And we've proven ourselves to be threatening.

I still want to do something, but allying myself to other vampires isn't exactly my favorite idea ever.

I'm throwing up my hands on this one, guys.

Remember: they show up as frozen balls of massive entropy on scans. They aren't alive. They can take control of your mind. They seem to only be around at night. If you're out and about past sunset from now on, it might be a good idea to keep up a mental shield if you can.

Jae-shin and I were at the Black Orchid last night. We're safe - everything went fine. I don't believe anyone identified us. We were as careful as we could have been.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do much sneaking around. They've got cameras rigged up. I could have taken some offline, but that would have just tipped security off that something was going on, so I stayed out of all the private spaces... which was fucking frustrating. They're obviously using that VIP area to feed on people. I saw a few vampires taking people up there with them. All of them came back out, thankfully, but their patterns were weaker. Tired. Light-headed.

Jae-shin was more useful than I was. He actually managed to track down a ghost and talk to her. Said her name was Alana. She seems to have been there for a while. According to her, there's no human trafficking ring being run out of that club, though she didn't seem surprised by the possibility that the owners could be involved in something like that. We didn't get a whole lot of concrete information from her. She was... pretty traumatized, I think. The vampires at this club might not be shipping people to Mexico, but people have been killed there. Sometimes by accident. Sometimes intentionally. Alana did say that no one has died there recently, but I'm not sure what her definition of "recent" even is.

That's about all we managed to get. I thought about trying to approach one of the vampires, but it didn't seem like it would be worth the risk. I highly doubt any of them would give me anything useful even in a best-case scenario, and we've already got a few contacts among them. I did talk to one of the bartenders though, and I have a date with him tonight. Maybe I'll manage to get something out of him. I doubt it'll be very significant, but it's worth a shot.
What do you know about the way they're stuck? I can communicate, even reach out to them, but if they aren't aware they're dead or somehow bound, it makes the situation a little more complicated.

Vampire Meeting Results: Iris/Derrick

So. That went entirely not as I expected.

We shared our findings about the Orchid with Derrick (that would be the vampire who we met at the Orchid that just wanted to get us out of there). He was pretty wary, but wanted to meet, so I did go to meet him. (In a nice public place, with Ian there, and with Grace monitoring.)

We spoke for a few moments and then he took me to meet an associate of his named Iris. (But, seriously, I assume that as with Hermetics, their names are largely assumed Names. Which doesn't make them inaccurate. Just perhaps not legal, trackable names.) I'm not going to lie, Iris is pretty much mysterious. I don't have any particular reason to expect her to be lying, but I got a much better feel for Derrick and Wesley. Iris...what she says matches up with all the facts as I know them, but I can't really speak to what I sense as her intentions or motivations.

This conversation condensed down to these basic facts (assuming they are true):
1. Iris, Derrick, and some of their associates (that number unknown) are trying to get Lilean Holdings the fuck out of Denver. [That I absolutely believe]
2. Denver is the newest location for Lilean, so they will be less compelled to spend resources keeping it. [This matches up neatly with all the information Grace found about the corporation.]
3. They want Lilean out because they say that no one is safe if they stay. [I agree with that - but please note I'm not promising we'll be safer with these vampires. Just that I agree with the assessment that we aren't terribly safe with them here.] Iris says that she does not want innocent people or her friends getting hurt. [I have no idea. But most of everything else she said seems true. She did not seem to be lying, but, again, I couldn't get a good read on her. She may have been.]
4. Derrick is going to make an offer to buy the club, which he says he intends to use as a safe space for his people to congregate.
5. According to Iris, Lilean will sell if they feel that that it is the best choice as far as risk/reward. She says if we make our opening move good enough, we may not even have to fight. [Well. This makes total tactical sense with everything we know.]
6. So, Iris proposes that in order to intimidate the fuck out of Lilean we present a united front. [Yeah. I think this is weird as Hell too, but I also think she's as backed into a corner trying to figure out how to take out an international crime organisation as we are.]

Now, I realise that this sounds a little crazy. But I did mention that while I assumed she would be displeased if we went on a vampire murder spree, there was one associate of Addario's that we wanted to be sure was handled [she says any of his associates are fair game so far as she's concerned]. Also, I asked nicely, and we can make arrangements to go to the Orchid and try to help the spirits trapped there (assuming Derrick ends up with the club). He requests that we not leave any lingering hidden magic. [Which I think should be easy enough to agree to because we can just use new magic and mundane methods to watch that club. Hidden magic actually sounds like like it just wouldn't be the most efficient way to go here.]

Iris wants to meet with Grayson. She pointed out that is a risk for everyone, not just us. There are plenty of stories she knows about vampires being lured into traps by us [and I don't know which stories she means specifically but I can confirm that that happens]. I do believe her proposal is serious. My only concerns, really, are what her motivations might be. I'm going to try to find out what I can, but there is only so much there as far as options for me. Still, I hope to have something soon.

Obviously, this decision is way bigger than just mine. Honestly, I have no idea what that should be, but I'm going to try to get at least a little more information.

I will try to be around the House this weekend if anyone wants to talk in more detail (this is obviously rather condensed even though it is long), but I am planning to check out a new church on Sunday. (Daylight hours and public - and probably non-eventful. Mostly I'm going to see if I see flyers for any youth programs and try to get a feel for whether the congregation feels like a cult. I'm not expecting much to come of this. If anyone is interested in coming also, or feels like I shouldn't be alone, that's fine. I will even try not to freak out about no one trusting me. Promise.)

Promise.)

What Kiara Knows of Vampires aka Vamp Mythology 101

There's a lengthy update from the Verbena at some point the following morning after Kalen and Ian's encounter with Wesley, imbued throughout with the brunette's particular brand of wry humor:

Are you guys ready for your Vampire Mythology 101 Lesson? I've contacted what was left of my old coven in New York and aside from 'exercise extreme caution in dealings', they came back with some information that might treat us well to bear in mind. Some of it comes from personal encounters like Sera and Grace's and some seems more urban legend as far as I can tell. I also checked out a few personal sources and after cross checking what I could find, here's what we know about vampires, or at least, isn't just pop culture run wild:

The old shtick that they hate sunlight? Actually entirely factual. It's definitely one way to kill them, if you can expose them long enough. The older a vampire is, the stronger they get, that myth is also unfortunately entirely true. Fire and decapitation, pretty much any means you can rip them to shreds is also pretty affective, assuming there's means.

Forget about garlic or crosses, a stake through the heart might temporarily take one down but it's by no means as exciting as Buffy the Vampire Slayer made it out to be. More sedated lump than dust in the wind. They are weaker during the day so if there's scouting to be done, that would be the time, also beneficial for the Vitamin D route of disposing of one mentioned above.

If you're looking to go in armed, these guys can take some serious damage. A regular gun isn't going to stop one, magically enhanced weaponry on the other hand, definitely the way to go if you're packing heat. Apparently back in the day, swords were a favorite, if you listen to my sources. I'm guessing decapitation was easier than most other options, take a thing's head off, it's going to slow its roll -- well, the torso, anyway.

I mentioned vampires are like wine, right? They get more potent as they age, well word is they also have varying powers that do the same. Finding documented proof of what they are is pretty difficult, vampires don't exactly dig being researched so they try and cover their tracks as much as they can. Sera and Grace saw the shadow trick themselves, so there's that one and apparently in their box of tricks is also nasty stuff like manipulation of thoughts and feelings, eradication of memory, total control over free will -- they do love their mind games. Given what Sera told Kalen and I she felt when she experienced what a feeding was like, I'm going to guess it's not unheard of for a victim to be willing for all the wrong reasons.

My Verbena sources also confirmed there's been documented accounts of vampires changing form the way some shape-shifters in our tradition can. Apparently Bram Stoker wasn't totally off base after all.

There's a break, then. Kiara no doubt typing up the rest of her findings, which appears several moments later:

Kalen mentioned vampire war and he's not wrong. The information is scarce and what little I found barely scratched the surface (I'm guessing with good reason) but vampires play politics within their ranks. There's just no way for us to know who is telling the truth or has less dubious scruples than the other -- in all likelihood, both are as bad as the other.

Are they all out to kill every last one of us -- I doubt that. I'm not sure most of us even register to them until we do. They're very old and while some of them might seem more human on the outside, they operate on a wholly different level.

I couldn't scope out much on Kalen's Mr Edevane other than his apparent devotion to the written word or on this Grayson Addario character other than he checks out as the manager of the Black Orchid as far as official business ties go. None of my contacts in the Verbena recognize the names, if they've been around half as long as we assume they have, they haven't run into bad blood with us -- no pun intended.

Which doesn't say much, knowing how slippery they can be.

I'm printing out all of this, so if anyone wants a hard copy, I'll have one at the ready. I'm not a girl to shy away from danger, but I have to side with my friends in the coven when I say whatever we do, however we proceed, caution is absolute. None of these creatures can be trusted to keep their word beyond what's useful to their agenda.

....is apparently complicated and will get us killed. Delicate balance of power. Consequences. Disaster. The usual.

That's all I learned from my first discussion about it. New discussion later this week. With a new vampire.

Well. Not everything. I was told if I met a man with black mirror eyes to run. So, apparently there is that in Denver. And it is (as I hear) worse than Greyson Addario. Considering who told me to run, and how he did so, I recommend running. And exercising extreme caution if you interpret running as charging straight up in its face.
